instead of entering a password, facebook now supports passkeys on smartphones like iphones and android devices. this means users can log in the same way they unlock their phones using face id, a fingerprint scan, or a screen lock pin.
this update is part of a broader initiative by major tech companies, including google and apple, to replace passwords with passkeys — a security method considered to be far more robust.
meta explained that passkeys are secure digital credentials that replace passwords. they allow users to log in to websites and apps using biometric data (fingerprint or facial recognition) or a device pin, offering a safer and smoother experience. once a passkey is set up, it eliminates the need to remember a password and significantly speeds up the login process.
according to meta, the passkey rollout for facebook has already begun and will be available to all users "soon." support for messenger will also follow “in the coming months,” and once the facebook passkey is set, it will work for messenger when the feature is enabled.
meta emphasized that while users have long been advised to create strong passwords, passwords still have major limitations they're hard to remember unless short (which makes them easy to guess), and many users reuse them across multiple platforms, putting all their accounts at risk in case of a breach.
even using a password manager isn't foolproof, as stored passwords can still be leaked or hacked. passkeys, however, don’t suffer from these vulnerabilities.
meta highlighted that passkeys offer a major security upgrade over traditional passwords and even sms-based one-time codes. because passkeys are resistant to phishing and cannot be stolen through malicious websites or scam links, they provide strong protection against common cyber threats.
with passkeys, users get enhanced security and a simplified login experience. meta added, “the passkey, along with your fingerprint, face scan, or screen pin, is always stored locally on your device we never see it, store it, or share it.”
how to set up a passkey on facebook: once passkeys are available to you, you’ll receive a notification when logging in. you can also manually enable the feature by visiting the accounts center under your facebook settings. linking your passkey takes just seconds you’ll confirm your identity using your phone’s face id, fingerprint, or screen lock pin. after setup, you’ll be able to use your passkey for future mobile logins.
