When will Earth have two moons in September and will it be visible?

September 26, 2024

September will bring the arrival of a second moon on Earth, but will we be able to see it? For what duration will it be there? These are the opinions of the experts.

By the end of September 2024, a second "mini-moon" is expected to enter Earth's orbit.

Adding two moons to the impressive list of natural wonders witnessed this year, including a lunar eclipse, the Northern Lights, and a Super Blue Moon, is truly amazing.

What then is the reason behind this? According to astronomers, a small asteroid known as 2024 PT5, which is not the same as a real moon, will orbit Earth briefly before returning to the solar system. Sounds amazing. This is all the information you require about the mini-moon, including when it will occur and its visibility.

How long will the second mini-moon endure and when will it arrive on Earth?

According to scientific forecasts, the asteroid is expected to enter Earth's orbit on September 29, 2024.

But unlike the moon, the asteroid will only orbit Earth for about two months, concluding at the end of November 2024, thus it will not make a full round. Its predicted duration is 57 days, concluding on November 25th, after which it will resume its orbit around the Sun.

"Under these conditions, the object's geocentric energy may turn negative, and the object may become a temporary moon of Earth," Space.com quoted Professor Carlos de la Fuente Marcos as saying.

"This specific thing will go through this process for approximately two months, beginning next week. It will not circle the planet in its entirety."

Is it possible to see Earth's second moon?

Despite how thrilling this is, it seems doubtful that onlookers will witness the asteroid enter Earth's orbit.

Its estimated width of only 10 meters makes it too tiny to be seen with the naked eye or even a small telescope.

"The object is too small and faint for standard amateur telescopes and binoculars," Carlos continued. But the object is far beyond the brightness range of the average telescope that is used by astronomers in the field."

From where did the mini-moon asteroid originate?

Although Earth frequently launches asteroids back into space after dragging them into orbit, this specific one was only found last month.

The 2024 PT5 is thought to have been a piece of the Moon that broke off from the belt of asteroid Arjuna, which circles the Sun.

Researchers have also been able to forecast the asteroid's behavior, including its size and speed, and they even anticipate that it will reenter our orbit in 2055.
