A recent analysis by anti-fraud and cyber security firm Seon found that cyber-attacks have nearly doubled since last year.
As the number of people worldwide using the internet is increasing very slowly, this means that your chances of being affected are rapidly increasing, so it's time to double-check your security settings.
The most common cyber-attacks reported were ransom ware, phishing, and malware.
Ransom ware refers to programs that threaten to lose data or share personal information if payment is not made.
Malware is similar but takes direct action to gain unauthorized access to your computer's data, storage, and processing power.
Phishing often takes the form of an email or social media message from someone pretending to be someone else to collect personal information according to Digitartlends.
The fourth most common type of cyber-attack involves unsecured cloud environments, which are thankfully becoming less common, dropping by more than 50% and representing less than 1% of the cases Seon noted. Stolen logins, known as credential stuffing, also account for less than 1%.
Software flaws and zero-day attacks hardly happen. It's worth noting that 34% of the cyber-attacks mentioned were unclassified, so there's a large margin of error in this report, with some fraud likely to occur more frequently. Seon's full report is available on her website.
Password-less logins will soon be available, which will help a lot, but that doesn't mean it's time to loosen up, with cyber-attacks becoming more frequent, you should strengthen your computer's defenses.
Some of the best ways to do this are also fairly easy, keep your operating system updated to the latest version, and also update your apps, especially your browser, login security can be improved by choosing stronger passwords, and enabling two-factor authentication.
