Referral traffic from Facebook and X to websites has significantly decreased in the past year, with social media contributing less to overall visitor numbers.
Facebook referrals to news websites have dropped by around 80% since September 2020, and X traffic has shrunk by approximately 60% during the same period.
Short-form video content has become more prominent on these platforms, leading to a shift in user behavior. As a result, fewer people are clicking on links, and both Facebook and X are prioritizing video content. This shift has transformed social media into more of an entertainment platform than a social one. Some publishers are adapting by posting article descriptions in image posts with links in the comments or using visual elements like carousels and videos to engage their audience.
It's time to reconsider how social media contributes to branding and engagement efforts, as traditional referral traffic is declining. Other strategies may be needed to drive website traffic.
