Microsoft fixes reversible screenshot vulnerability on Windows
March 27, 2023
Microsoft released an update to fix a vulnerability in the screenshot editing program in Windows 10 and 11.
Bleeping Computer previously discovered that the vulnerability, called aCropalypse, allows individuals to restore an edited portion of a screenshot, which could reveal personal information that has been cropped or hidden.
According to Microsoft, the issue (CVE-2023-28303) affects the Snip & Sketch app on Windows 10 and the Snipping Tool on Windows 11.
However, this only applies to images that were created, saved, edited, and then saved back to the original file, and to those that were opened in the Snipping Tool, edited, and saved to the same location. It does not affect snapshots that were modified before they were saved, nor does it affect snapshots that have been copied and pasted, such as into an email or document.
